Mary Lou’s Quick Garlic Guacamole
1 to 2 cloves of garlic, pressed
1 large ripe avocado
1 to 2 green onions, chopped
30 to 45 ml (2 to 3 tbsps) fresh lemon juice
125 ml (½ cup) salsa
1 ml (1/4 tsp) sea salt
½ ml (1/8 tsp) ground black pepper

Peel the avocado, remove pit and slice. Put all ingredients into a food processor and blend for 30 seconds. Serve with vegetable sticks or taco chips.

     Retired, yes, but never too old to rock!
     British director Stephen Walker’s 2007 documentary Young @ Heart tells the story of a New England senior citizen’s chorus that belts out its own renditions of contemporary songs by the likes of Radiohead, The Clash, and David Bowie. The fact that the chorus’s members are willing to tackle such unfamiliar and daunting material attests to the spirit of adventure that is a crucial spur to their shared bonhomie.
     The movie offers an encouraging vision of old age in which the depression commonly associated with decrepitude is held at bay by music making, camaraderie and a sense of humour. Good medicine indeed!
      According to Hanni, it’s a heartwarming, hilarious, and poignant movie – watch it and weep – for joy.

If you enjoy hiking and nature’s wondrous beauty, both Judy & Karen recommend a visit to Rock Dunder.
Rock Dunder is a granitic exposure situated in the UNESCO-protected Thousand Islands Frontenac Biosphere Reserve.
A former Boy Scout wilderness camp for 40 years, it has been managed by the Rideau Waterway Land Trust since the spring of 2006, and is maintained by volunteers from the Rideau Trail Association.
Enjoy breathtaking views from the summit which rises to a height of 176 metres (577 feet), 77 metres (253 feet) above the water level of Morton Bay. Reaching it involves a moderate hike, with short strenuous stretches, along well-marked trails which pass through mature forests and along rocky shorelines.
The trailhead is accessible off Hwy 15, between Kingston and Smiths Falls, just south of Morton.

It’s important to prepare for gardening by practicing yoga poses which involve shoulders, chest, low back, hips and knees as well as the abdominal core. This practice will take about 20 minutes or so.
Remember to listen to your body and don’t do anything that feels uncomfortable. Better yet, come to a yoga class if you have any questions or concerns.
